Peru - (29.July - 09. Aug. 2002): (It is a very poor country, but with rich history and unique Andean-nature. Cusco was the capital of the Inca-empire, but it was destroyed by the Spanish conquestors and its sacred treasures were melted into Christian altars, the old temples were used for building new churches and cathedrals instead. Cusco is also the city with the closest airport to Machu Picchu (this is a lost Inca-city, that was NOT destroyed and about 100 km away from Cusco). And Cusco also has the second highest airport of the world! (Altitude is 3500 m = 10.000 feet). Means: altitude-sickness for visitors like me (from sea-level) – and pretty cold climate – though very close to the equator! ):
